High-energy-density plasma in femtosecond-laser-irradiated nanowire-array targets for nuclear reactions

In this work, the high-energy-density plasmas (HEDP) evolved from joule-class-femtosecond-laser-irradiated nanowire-array (NWA) targets were numerically and experimentally studied. The results of particle-in-cell simulations indicate that ions accelerated in sheath field around surfaces nanowires are eventually confined a plasma, contributing most to high energy densities. protons emitted front NWA provide rich information about interactions occur. We give electron ion densities for broad target parameter ranges. found be an order magnitude higher than those planar targets, volume HEDP was several-fold greater. At optimal parameters, 8% laser can converted protons, at GJ/cm 3 level. experiments, measured reached 4 MeV, changes with NWA’s parameters fit simulation well. Experimental measurements neutrons 2 H(d,n) He fusion yield (24 ± 18) × 10 6 /J deuterated polyethylene also confirmed these results.
